Shouldn’t Retail Stores Close For The 4th If They Are Patriotic?
My employer is not even closing early on July 4 (this upcoming Friday) – - I do get holiday pay (time & a half) but it’s a bummer that we have to come in and everybody else who has the day off thinks nothing of the holiday and its meaning for those of us whose ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War . . . If it wasn’t for people like my ancestor everybody who are blue-collar workers would go a long time in between Easter and Christmas probably ! ! !

When I first retired from the U. S. Navy, I drove for a local Lowe’s branch. We had to work the 4th. That evening, we had all the flat beds lined up and chairs put on them so we could see the fireworks over Mt. Trashmore (yup, that’s the name of the 60 foot high hill made of trash. . . now a park). I asked the store manager how we did that day. He told me he hadn’t even made enough to make payroll for the day.
Stores have 4 OF JULY sales, CHRISTMAS sales (no EID or RAMADAN or HANUKKAH or PASSOVER sales), MEMORIAL DAY and LABOR DAY, and MOTHERS’/FATHERS’ DAY sales, PRESIDENTS’ DAY sales, and on and on. I’m wondering when they’ll be having MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR BIRTHDAY sales.
I am curious what you would be doing IF you did have the day off? How would you be celebrating our independence from England? Will your flag be flying high that day?
We are becoming a 24/7/365 society where you can buy and sell and “shop til you drop” with no sense of community responsibility or ethics – - I feel your employer is treating you shabbily and should have let people sign up for a shift on such a day that is meaningful to patriots and proud American citizens and expatriates!
there is nothing quite as american as the free enterprise system! Employers have the freedom to open, or close, and employees have the freedom to work, or ask for time off, or find a new job. this is the land of the free! It’s great!
Their is no such thing as a patriotic store. all stores are buisnesses that make money. they can care less if the whole world is bbqing cuz if they gain 3 cutomers they still make money
